Love dissolves fear. You cannot be afraid when you are feeling love. Since everything is energy, and love encompasses all energies, all is love. But by all means be true in your love, for yourself and others.

Dear Indy: I recently met a guy and we have really hit it off. A couple of weeks ago I spent a weekend at his home and it was great! This guy (my boyfriend) told me at the inception of our relationship that he has two children from a previous marriage, but over that weekend he told me he has 3- the addition is the first, and doesn’t live in the country. I was pretty upset because he lied to me. He said it isn’t a big deal but to me it is especially if we’re planning on having a life together. I’m young and cannot see myself being step-mom to 3 of his offspring, plus the 2 he wants to have with me. I love him but am I being selfish? Please help! Fab Girl -NY, NY

Indy: Ok Ms.Young & Fabulous this is a bit much too take in all at once. I on the other hand understand, I myself have dated men with children and believe me it isn’t an easy situation especially when you don’t have children of your own. Your circumstances and ways of think are naturally different from those who have children.

Lets cut to the chase. The man has three children and two other women who will be in his life for the rest of his life which means those extra five people will be in your life and your children’s lives as well if you choose to be with him. Is that something your cut out for? You have to be honest with yourself. It’s not about being selfish it’s you only have one life and its precious and you owe it to yourself to be clear on what it right for you. Your boyfriend made these choices for himself and now he what’s to be with you and start a family. If you love him and him having children isn’t an issue for you I say great but believe me you should talk it over in detail and let him know your boundaries and concerns.

In my opinion if your going to be his wife, you come first he has a responsibility to you and you’re your family that he wants with you and you deserve that security. It’s about compromise and patients. If you are both on the same page with regards to your plans and your life together I say great but if you’re not there are always going to be problems. You and your mate have to have a united front so that no one will think they can disrespect or disrupt what your union means, past wives, children or anyone else. And he should know that if mama’s not happy no one will be happy, that’s you my dear.

Now lets get to the lie. Why is he lying about his child? Red flags are going up for me. And him saying it's not a big deal well that’s ridiculous. Whether the child is here or in another country is beside the point this child will have brothers and sister and a stepmother to look forward to. Your children may want to know their sibling and have a relationship, which they should. And once again what's up with the lying. I think this is an issue you should resolve before you start discussing marriage or children. The last thing you want to do is be tied down in a relationship with children and a man that lies. Remember your young and fabulous I say do without until you know for sure if this is the situation for you.

Dear Indy: I'm a 28-year-old smart, pretty woman whose heart was shattered by a man I adored. After spending six months getting to know him, and another year living in another country to be with him, he out of the blue decided he wasn't in-love with me anymore. With my heart in my carry on bag I came back home and I've successfully picked up the pieces. My issue is I recently received a call from him saying he was coming to the city and would like to go out for dinner. Should I go? Will I look desperate? I still care about him but I don't want to be in a relationship with him ever again.

There are times in our life where we wear the face that keeps the peace, the face that seems discrete, the face that tells the lie of happiness, even when sadness is the dominant emotion. We go through our preparation ritual, the before we leave the house routine. We pick out the perfect outfit, the over-priced hand bag, the painful but gorgeous shoes and decide this is the me for today. But let's not forget about that face, that magnificent face, the face of a liar. If you didn't have to lie what would your face say?

Dear Indy: I've been struggling for some time with alcohol abuse, but I've managed to keep it to myself. All of my friends abuse some form of drug, so they can't be but so supportive to me. I really want to stop drinking. I'm the only child and my only living family is my aunt whom I miss and love very much, but when I spend time with her I'm not under the influence so she's unaware of my habit. I spend a lot of time pretending. I have a great job, a beautiful three bedroom house, and three forms of transportation in my driveway. I'm not in a relationship right now, but I guess that's for the best, considering I have this issue. I know I have to get some help but that's not why I'm writing. Indy: First Jordan, you need to start getting help today. Please make your life the priority. Your main focus should be about joining some form of AA meeting. And yes, you should discuss this with your aunt. The thing about relationships, whether they're intimate, or platonic is, you must show up as your total whole self for them to work with honesty and integrity. If we were to go by the dictionary's definition of fear it would be, a feeling of agitation and anxiety caused by present or imminent danger. Another definition is, a feeling of disquiet or apprehension. My understanding of fear is the birth of negative thoughts placed in our minds resulting in a state of emotional imbalance, leading toward unstable decisions. "If I think it, so shall it be." I say this to say, what prompts you to purchase that new Louis Vuitton "Never Full" ? How agitated must one be to justify a purchase unwarranted, what is it that you are afraid to address when your emotions go from disappointment to fulfillment when you've made eye contact with your new purchase? In my experience there is no true therapy in retail therapy. The battle with shopping while upset has only led me down a more unstable path. The butterflies in my stomach, the unanswered questions that play over and over in your mind and the constant emotional feelings of doubt. All of these emotions add up to one conclusion (the answer is NO). The only way to shop, is to shop with a clear view, and joyful spirit so that you may sincerely enjoy your purchases. If in-turn you shop while upset, you may very well regret your items and you still have to address the original issue. Retail therapy is just therapeutic for the retailers. A conscious choice is a peaceful choice.

HOW DO US LADIES APPROACH MEN WITHOUT BEING TO FORWARD

It's true that it is easier to play hard-to-get with some people than it is with others. However, we tend to attract people who bring with them what we need to grow. A man or woman's "shortcomings" can teach us a lot about what we have within ourselves and may not otherwise be able to see.

I am a strong believe in "It's better to work with what you're given than try to find what you don't know exists". The beauty of this is that it allows one to step up to any challenge with open eyes, and grow in wisdom and power.

Based on the so many emails I receive from men and women interested in learning how to play hard-to-get, men and women find it really difficult approaching or dating members of the opposite sex who are very shy and over self-consciousness.

Over the years, I've identified two types of shy people; those who give in too easily because they are afraid that if they hold out, the chance will be lost forever and those who hold out tightly because they don't want people putting pressure on them to do things they are not yet ready to do. Both types have one thing in common and that is preoccupation with the kind of impression they are making -- Do they like me? Do I look good? Do I sound stupid? I'm I doing it the right way?

Shyness can be so cute -- at least to me. I'd rather be in the company of a shy man or woman than a loud-mouthed overly aggressive smooth-talking person any time. I find men and women who think they are God's gift to mankind shallow and so exhausting mentally, emotionally and spiritually. On the other hand I find that many shy people have a depth to them that's very refreshing and intriguing almost to the point of being mysterious. This may be because they spend so much time in self-evaluation and are very introspective.

That's just one side to shyness. Shyness can also be really annoying and a major turn off because of a shy person's self-preoccupation with making the right kind of impression. This often interferes with shy people's self-expression making it not so much fun to play the "Catch Me" game with them. They are the only ones hiding and you are the one doing the seeking most of the time. That's so awfully one-sided.

There is no easy way to heal shyness in another person, but if you're really interested in that person, then you have to work on reducing the anticipation of failure or rejection that shy people dread.

Even when they feel inner warmth and enthusiasm, it is not easy for shy and over self-conscious people to show it. The over concern with the kind of impression they are making makes it difficult for them to be spontaneous, or to take the initiative. To get moving, they need someone to light a fire under them.

This is where you come in. Don't' expect them to initiate contact, you do it (Playing Hard-To- Get The Love Way Strategy 1 - Initiate The Chase). The only difference when dealing with a shy person is that, in the beginning it's up to you show more interest and create lots of "open doors" that will make him or her feel that it's "okay" to come out of his or her shell. It's important to note that as in Playing Hard-To- Get The Love Way Strategy 2, showing interest is not the same thing as coming on too strong and overwhelming the other person with attention and affection. Even shy people don't like people who are "too much."

You have to keep giving him/her verbal and non verbal signs that you are interested-- almost all the time. You have to be persistent in keeping him/her emotionally engaged: ask for his/her advice, encourage his/her feedback and ideas, and sincerely compliment him/her on small things like his/her dress style, voice tone, patience when you are late etc. With a much more confidence and assertive person "I am sorry I am late" will do but go the extra mile for someone who needs more reassurance. Just don't mistake compliments with false flattery.

Challenge him/her come out of his/her shell every chance you get. For example instead of dinner and a movie, arrange for both of you to volunteer for a cause he/she strongly believes (most shy people have at least one or two things they passionately believe in). Having fun together in a non-threatening setting helps both of you get the relationship off the ground. When you spend your leisure hours together working on projects, doing practical tasks or being of service, what you're really doing is giving yourselves the chance to balance your interests.

To do this successfully, you need to adjust your own energy and find the right balance between self-assertion and compromise. This will make neither person feel is dominated by the other. This should not be very hard as Playing Hard-To-Get The Love Way is all about the right balance between self-assertion and compromise.

Knowing that someone is thinking of them first and actually allowing them to express who they are without worrying about the impression they are making makes shy people feel appreciated. You'll both be surprised at how quickly a shy person warms up and takes up the role of the initiator. He/she may in fact have a natural tendency to take the lead because shy people to analyze stuff deeply and always have so many new ideas going on inside.

If you consider the situation impossible, and just complain about his/her shyness and self-consciousness instead of trying to work with it, you will miss out on a relationship with great potential. But if you work with his/her shyness -- not try to change him/her but actually working with it -- you create a new entity that is not either one of you, but a new "being" that you create together, and which is greater than the sum of its parts. This is the relationship itself.

You can then start using all the other Playing Hard-To- Get The Love Way strategies.
