How many faces do you put on? There are times in our life where we wear the face that keeps the peace, the face that seems discrete, the face that tells the lie of happiness, even when sadness is the dominant emotion. We go through our preparation ritual, the before we leave the house routine. We pick out the perfect outfit, the over-priced hand bag, the painful but gorgeous shoes and decide this is the me for today. But let's not forget about that face, that magnificent face, the face of a liar. If you didn't have to lie what would your face say?
Dear Indy: I've been struggling for some time with alcohol abuse, but I've managed to keep it to myself. All of my friends abuse some form of drug, so they can't be but so supportive to me. I really want to stop drinking. I'm the only child and my only living family is my aunt whom I miss and love very much, but when I spend time with her I'm not under the influence so she's unaware of my habit. I spend a lot of time pretending. I have a great job, a beautiful three bedroom house, and three forms of transportation in my driveway. I'm not in a relationship right now, but I guess that's for the best, considering I have this issue. I know I have to get some help but that's not why I'm writing. I was just wondering how long it should be before I told my aunt? She's like a mother and I'm tired of pretending, and lying and covering up my pain. Jordan - Long Island, NY
Indy: First Jordan, you need to start getting help today. Please make your life the priority. Your main focus should be about joining some form of AA meeting. And yes, you should discuss this with your aunt. The thing about relationships, whether they're intimate, or platonic is, you must show up as your total whole self for them to work with honesty and integrity. No, it is not a good time to start an intimate relationship now, I truly think you need to build a loving, honest relationship with yourself first before you try yourself out with another person.
